There are many differences between the Fein Multimaster and the Fein Supercut

The Fein Multimaster and the Fein Supercut are both quality tools.  People often wonder why there is such a huge price difference between the two tools since the Fein Supercut tool is over twice the price of the Fein Multimaster tool.  Having used both of these tools in the course of my regrouting business I will review the different features of these two tools and let you decide if it is worth it to spend the extra money on the Fein Supercut over the less expensive Fein Multimaster tool.

The Fein Multimaster and Fein Supercut are both quality tools.

The Fein Multimaster and Fein Supercut are both quality tools that will last a lifetime. They both come with 3 year warranties and they are quality made tools for serious contractors or DIY home improvement and remodeling individuals. In recent years there have been many copy cat tools like the cordless Bosch Multimaster tool and the Dremel Multi-max tool. These copy cat mulitmaster tools all cost less then $100 which is much cheaper then the Fein Oscillating tools. I have seen these copy cat multimaster tools and even tried them out at some of the home improvement stores and they do not compare to the quality construction of the Fein oscillating tools. These tools to me are cheap plastic toys with week motors and cheap plastic knobs and switches. You really can not do any serious contracting work with these tools or you will burn out the motor, break the tool head or break one of the cheap plastic control knobs. These tools are ok for the occasional drywall cutting task or simple wood sanding jobs but I would not count on them to last more then a few months with moderate usage.

Differences between the Fein Multimaster and the Fein Supercut.

There are many differences between the Fein Multimaster and the Fein Supercut that set these two tools apart:

  • Longer length and better ergonomic feel of the Fein Supercut. The first thing you notice when you handle these two tools is the better ergonomic feel and grip of the Fein Supercut over the Fein Multimaster. The Fein Multimaster is longer and slightly heavier then the Fein Supercut. Handling the Fein Supercut makes you feel like you have more control over the blade and this can be important for making precision cuts in wood or trying to hold the tool steady when removing grout from between tiles.
  • Increased power of the Fein Supercut. While both the Fein Multimaster and Fein Supercut have plenty of power the Fein Supercut is capable of powering through tough cuts or removing grout much more efficiently then the Fein Multimaster. I do a lot of regrouting work and this requires a lot of power to be able to constantly grind out grout. The Fein Supercut is able to grind out the grout much quicker without overheating the motor which can happen when you are removing grout with the Fein Multimaster.
  • Better construction quality of the on/off switch on the Fein Supercut. While both the Fein Multimaster and the Fein Supercut are quality made tools the Fein Supercut takes the quality construction to new levels. The on/off switch on the Fein Supercut is flush with the tool in an indented position on the tool body and it is made of rotomolded material. The on/off switch on the Fein Multimaster is not cheap but it is a plastic switch nonetheless. The Fein Multimasters on/off switch is also not flush with the tool body and this can get in the way when you are holding the tool at different angles. The Fein Multimaster's on/off switch can also be inadvertently switched on or off when it is bumped into while holding the tool. The on/off tool on the Fein Supercut is by contrast almost impossible to inadvertantly turn on or off and it will never get in your way no matter what angle you hold the tool at. On caveat with the Fein Supercut tool is the on/off switch is more difficult to turn on or off but this is a small price to pay for the increased control and out of the way position of the on/off switch.
  • Better construction quality of the variable speed control knob. Just like the on/off switch the variable speed control know is made of better quality rotomolded material and it is flush with the Fein Supercut body. The Fein Multimaster variable speed control knob is also on the side of the tool which increases the probablility that it will get in your way or get inadvertently adjusted while working with the tool.

  • Better motor cooling capabitlies of the Fein Supercut. The Fein Super cut has wider side air vents to more efficiently cool the motor under heavy usage. More importantly the bottom side air exhaust vents of the Fein Supercut are in the middle of the tool next to the motor while the Fein Multimasters middle air vents are on the bottom of the tool making them relatively useless. The increased ventilation capabilities of the Fein Supercut make this tool much better equipped to do heavy duty construction work for longer periods of time then the Fein Multimaster tool.

  • Better quality head, neck and tool bit holder on the Fein Supercut. Probably the most significant advantage of the Fein Supercut over the Fein Multimaster is the head, neck and tool bit holder design. The neck of the Fein Supercut is shorter and wider on the Fein Multimaster. The neck and bit holder on the Fein Supercut is also made of extremely hardened metal to securely fasten the blade or tool bit without the blade slipping around. All of these factors combine to give you much more control of the blade or bit you are working with to do precision cutting, sanding, scrapping or any other of the hundreds of tasks these tools are good for. The longer neck on the Fein Multimaster may help you to get into some tighter corners then the Fein Supercut but the Fein Supercut does have an adaptor so you can increase the neck length of the Fein Supercut and allow you to use Fein Multimaster blades in the Fein Supercut. You can not use any of the Fein Multimaster blades on the Fein Supercut.

Fein Multimaster vs Fein Supercut head design.

  • Bit and tool holder is much better on the Fein Supercut. The Fein Supercut uses a hex design to hold the bit into the Fein Supercut tool while the Fein Multimaster uses a star head design to hold the bit in place. The Fein Supercut also has a wider bit holder radius to hold more of the bit in place than the Fein Multimaster. This gives you a tighter grip on the bit or blade and serves to give you more control of the bit or blade while you are working.
  • Choice of blades. The Fein Multimaster and Fein Supercut both have hundreds of blades for handling many construction and remodeling work around your home. My main purpose for using these tools is for regrouting tile showers and countertops. The Fein Supercut has a wider selection of 3/64 as well as 5/64 inch diamond coated grout removal blades. The Fein Multimaster only supplies the wider 5/64 inch diamond coated grout removal blades. The smaller 3/64 inch diamond coated grout removal blades are definately necessary for removing grout in shower tiles with standard shower tiles that are close together with unsanded grout. This lack of blade selection precludes the Fein Multimaster as a contractor grade grout removal and regrouting tool.

Fein Multimaster vs Fein Supercut conclusion.

I feel that both the Fein Multimaster and the Fein supercut are quality tools that are useful for contractors and DIY homeowners alike. The better quality design and price increase of the Fein Supercut make it designed more for contractors who will be using this tool on a daily basis. The Fein Multimaster will serve most DIY homeowners and contractors who plan on only using the tool on a limited basis. If you will be using the tool on a daily or even weekly basis then the Fein Supercut's superior design and build quality seems like the best choice. Remember these tools will last a lifetime so for frequent use the Fein Supercut is the hands down choice. Also for tile and regrouting work the limited selection of diamond coated regrouting blades make the Fein Multimaster unsuitable as a contractor grade regrouting tool.
